The Sycamores scored eight runs in the fifth inning

FORT MYERS, Florida -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell 16-3 to Indiana State on Saturday afternoon at Hammond Stadium.

The Gophers trailed 3-1 after four innings of play before the Sycamores broke the game open with an eight-run, nine-hit top of the fifth inning to go up 11-1.

Brett Bateman went 1-for-3 and came around to score Minnesota's first run in the bottom of the first inning on a fielding error by ISU. Jack Kelly went 2-for-4 and delivered a two-run double in the eighth inning to cash in a pair of runs for the Gophers. Chase Stanke also had a strong day offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double.

Minnesota used seven pitchers on the day, who combined to surrender 22 hits (season-high) and 16 runs.

The Sycamores started the scoring in the top of the first inning when Miguel Rivera blasted a two-out, three-run home run to right field. Minnesota would answer with one in the bottom of the first when Bateman scored off an error by the ISU second baseman.

Aidan Maldonado (0-2) made his second start of the season for Minnesota. He lasted 4.1 innings and was credited for five strikeouts, six hits and six earned runs. He held the Sycamores scoreless in the second, third and fourth innings before he left with one out and men on first and third in the top of the fifth. He was replaced by left-hander Noah DeLuga, who gave up four hits and five earned runs before being replaced by Richie Holetz.

ISU would tack on three more runs in the top of the eighth inning to go up 14-1 before a two-run double from Jack Kelly plated the Gophers final two runs of the ballgame. The Sycamores plated two more in the top of the ninth to make the final score 16-3.

Sycamores starter Matt Jachec (2-0) went 7.0 innings, striking out six while allowing just five hits and one unearned run.
