Maryland hit five home runs on Friday afternoon
Maryland (24-6, 3-1 Big Ten) scored four of its 11 runs in the top of the fourth inning off a pair of two-run home runs. The two teams entered the frame tied at 2-2. Minnesota would cut the deficit to 6-3 but would get no closer the rest of the way. The Terrapins hit five home runs on the day, including three two-run shots and two solo home runs.
Gophers (8-19, 0-4 Big Ten) right-hander Sam Ireland (3-2) went 4.2 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) and striking out six. Maryland's Nick Dean (3-1) tossed 6.0 innings, giving up three earned runs and six hits.
Offensively, Brett Bateman and Jack Kelly paced Minnesota with two-hit days at the plate with an RBI each. The Gophers totaled 10 hits, including two home runs on the afternoon. Drew Stahl (solo) and Chase Stanke (two-run) both hit long balls.
Maryland jumped ahead immediately as leadoff hitter Luke Shilger hit a home run on the first pitch of the game to put the visitors ahead. The Terps would plate one more on an RBI double by Troy Schreffler to take a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
Drew Stahl blasted his second home run of the season on a no-doubt shot to left center to put his team on the board in the bottom of the first. Minnesota would tie the game at two after three consecutive singles by Kelly, Grimm and Bork (RBI).
Both teams were held scoreless in the second and third innings, but the Terps unloaded for four runs in the fourth. They got two-run home runs from Bobby Zmarzlak and Chris Alleyne to go up 6-2 through 3.5.
The Gophers got one back in the bottom of the fourth. Boston Merila hit a one-out single and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a walk from Andrew Wilhite, Bateman laced a line shot into center field that scored Merila and advanced Wilhite to third. Bateman moved to second on the throw. With two outs and men on second and third, Stahl hit a rocket to short that was fielded on a short hop and the Terps were able to get out of the inning without any further damage.
Maryland added two more in the top of the sixth after Nick Lorusso hit a two-run shot to left, UMD's third two-run blast of the day.
Minnesota showed some fight in the seventh inning, scoring a pair to cut the deficit to 8-5. After Wilhite walked and Bateman singled, Stahl laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. A sacrifice fly by Chase Stanke plated Wilhite before Bateman scored on an RBI double from Kelly.
The Terps would add three more in the top of the eighth on a solo home run from Matt Shaw, an RBI single from Sean Lane and a wild pitch from Will Semb that scored a run.
Chase Stanke hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth to get the Gophers within four before they ultimately fell, 11-7.
