IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Minnesota baseball team fell 2-1 to the Iowa Hawkeyes in game two of the three-game series on Saturday at Duane Banks Field.
J.P. Massey (2-5) tossed 4.2 innings, striking out six while allowing five hits and two earned runs. Iowa's Connor Schultz also lasted 4.2 innings, striking out four, giving up five hits and one earned run. UI left-hander Ben Beutel (2-0) picked up the win after the southpaw struck out four and allowed one hit in 2.1 innings.
Minnesota (10-22, 1-7 Big Ten) led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth before the Hawkeyes (19-12, 5-3 Big Ten) scored a pair on consecutive two-out RBI singles. That turned out to be enough offense for UI as the Hawkeyes bullpen stymied the Gophers offense.
For the second day in-a-row, Minnesota started the scoring as Chase Stanke blasted a no-doubt home run to deep right field in the top of the second to put the 'U' up 1-0.
Iowa had guys on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the third before Massey ended the inning by striking out UI's Tallman looking. Iowa had a man on third with two outs in the fourth inning, but Massey was able to get out of the jam once again by inducing a groundout.
After going down in order in both the third and fourth innings, Minnesota had something going offensively in the top of the fifth when Kyle Bork and Drew Stahl hit consecutive one-out singles. The threat ended when Ronald Sweeny, who came in to pinch run for Bork, got caught in a rundown and was tagged out at third. After Jake Perry walked, Brett Bateman lined out to center to end the threat
The Hawkeyes finally broke through in the bottom of the fifth. A one-out single and a stolen base from UI's Michael Seegers spark plugged the offense. Massey picked up his sixth strikeout of the game for the second out, but back-to-back Iowa singles up the middle scored runners from second base and UI took a 2-1 lead. Josh Culliver replaced Massey with two outs and two men on and induced a fly ball to left field to end the inning.
Minnesota never really got anything going offensively after the fifth inning. Jack Kelly singled with one out in the sixth but was picked off shortly after. After going down 1-2-3 in the top of the seventh, Jake Perry walked with one out in the eighth inning, but Brett Bateman grounded into a double play to end the threat.
The Gophers went down 1-2-3 in the ninth inning to end the game.
