Four-Run Second Inning Dooms Gophers in Loss to Hawkeyes

4/15/2022 9:44:00 PM | Baseball

Iowa scored four of its nine runs in the bottom of the second

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball team dropped a 9-3 decision to the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday night to open the three-game series. UI scored four of its nine runs in the bottom of the second inning, grabbing a 6-2 lead that it would not relinquish.

Minnesota right-hander Sam Ireland (3-3) lasted just 4.0 innings, giving up six runs and striking out four. His opposition, Adam Mazur (3-2), struck out 11 and allowed just six hits in 8.0 innings pitched.

Offensively, Minnesota had seven hits, with Boston Merila and Chase Stanke both tallying two-hit days at the dish. Stanke hit a two-run double and Brady Counsell (1-for-4) delivered an RBI single for the Gophers' run production.

Minnesota jumped out fast offensively, getting a leadoff single from Bateman to start the game. With two outs and Bateman still on first, Brady Counsell reached base on an error by the Iowa third baseman. After another error on a pickoff attempt by UI's starting pitcher allowed Bateman and Counsell to advance to third and second, respectively, Chase Stanke roped a two-run double into the right center field gap to give the Gophers an early lead.

The Hawkeyes answered back with a pair of their own in the bottom of the first. After Ireland hit UI's No. 2 hitter, right fielder Keaton Anthony tied the game with a two-run no-doubter over the left field fence.

UI took its first lead of the game with a four-run bottom of the second inning. After a leadoff single to right center and a hit-batsman, the Hawkeyes scored their first run of the inning on a double off the left field wall by catcher Ben Tallman. A walk from Ireland then loaded the bases with no outs. Another ball was hit out to left by shortstop Michael Seegers that was mishandled by Merila, scoring two more runs. An RBI single from the next hitter, Peyton Williams, drove Iowa's lead up to 6-2.

Neither team would score from the third through the fifth innings, but Minnesota would get one back in the sixth. Drew Stahl hit a leadoff double to start the inning and came around to score on an RBI single to right from Counsell.

Iowa got one back in the bottom of the frame on a deep home run down the right field line by first baseman Peyton Williams. Williams also hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth before Anthony drilled an RBI double to give the Hawkeyes their final two runs of the game.

The Hawkeyes tallied 12 hits, getting standout performances from both Peyton Williams (2-for-2, HR, 3 RBI) and Keaton Anthony (3-for-5, HR, 3 RBI).
