Gophers Score Late to Take Down No. 23 Maryland

4/10/2022 4:11:00 PM | Baseball

Brady Counsell tripled and scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth

MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth to defeat No. 23 Maryland 4-3 on Sunday afternoon at Siebert Field.

With the game tied 3-3 and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, freshman second baseman Brady Counsell tripled down the right field line and scored the eventual game-winning run on a passed ball. Minnesota (9-20, 1-5 Big Ten) had previously led for the entire game until Maryland (25-7, 4-2 Big Ten) tied it up at three with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Gophers right-hander Aidan Maldonado (1-3) went 6.0 innings, striking out five and allowing seven hits and just one earned run. Maryland's Jason Savacool (5-2) allowed three earned runs, four hits and struck out seven in 7.0 innings. Both had no decisions. Gophers sophomore Noah DeLuga (1-0) earned the win while Tom Skoro tallied his first save as a Gopher.

As a team, Minnesota had five hits, with Boston Merila and Drew Stahl both tallying one hit each with RBI doubles. Maryland scatted 10 hits across nine innings.

Minnesota started out hot, striking with two runs in the bottom of the first. Brett Bateman started the game with a leadoff single and came around to score after Drew Stahl slashed a double into the left field corner. Stahl, who advanced to third on the relay throw to the plate as the Terps tried to get Bateman at home, scored after Jack Kelly grounded out to first.

Maryland got one back in the top of the second when Troy Schreffler doubled to right center, scoring Matt Shaw. Shaw had singled to leadoff the inning.

The Gophers scored their third run in the fourth inning to go up 3-1. Andrew Wilhite drew a two-out walk before Boston Merila drilled a double into the left center gap, scoring Wilhite from first.

Maldonado brought his best stuff on Sunday, shutting the Terps down in his final 4.0 innings of work. He worked out of jams and stranded four in the third and fourth innings combined. He worked around a hit-by-pitch in the fifth and a single in the sixth to hold the visitors at bay once again.

Freshman right-hander Seth Clausen replaced Maldonado in the seventh inning and ran into some trouble. After inducing a groundout to start the inning, he walked the second batter. UMD's Luke Shliger and Chris Alleyne then hit back-to-back singles, with the latter driving in a run to cut the Gophers lead to 3-2. Clausen was then replaced by sophomore southpaw Noah DeLuga. An RBI single by Nick Lorusso scored Shliger to tie the game at 3-3. DeLuga responded positively, striking out the next hitter and inducing a groundout to second to strand a pair in scoring position and keep the game tied.

After being held scoreless in the seventh, Minnesota finally broke through in the eighth when Counsell looped his triple into the right field corner. UMD right fielder Troy Schreffler dove to try and catch the slicing ball down the line but came up empty. Chase Stanke came to the plate next and on the second pitch, a passed ball allowed Counsell to score and the Gophers re-took the lead.

Gophers redshirt senior left-hander Tom Skoro earned his first save as a Gopher, striking out the side for a perfect 1-2-3 ninth inning.
