Joe Hauser hit a grand slam in the fourth inning

FORT MYERS, Florida -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell short to Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday night at Swanson Stadium, with the Eagles taking home a 13-5 victory.

Sophomore shortstop Joe Hauser paced the Gophers offensively, going 2-for-4 with a grand slam. Easton Bertrand and Boston Merila had two singles each. Minnesota had eight hits compared to 11 for the Eagles, which had five extra-base hits, including three home runs.

Six Minnesota pitchers combined to pitch eight innings, giving up 13 runs, striking out five with seven walks.

After 2.5 scoreless innings, FGCU broke through with six runs in the bottom of the third. After a leadoff walk and a single, the Eagles' Brian Ellis drove a three-run home run over the right field fence to put his team up 3-0. After two consecutive walks, Minnesota starting pitcher Trent Schoeberl exited the game and was replaced by freshman Seth Clausen. FGCU would add three more runs on a pair of RBI singles to go up 6-0 after three frames.

Minnesota would get right back into the game in the top of the fourth inning, however. After singles by Merila and Bertrand and a walk from Jack Kelly, Joe Hauser cleared the bases with his first collegiate home run, a grand slam to left center field. The 'U' would push across one more run in the inning to cut the FGCU lead to just one at 6-5.

The Eagles would respond in the bottom of the fifth inning, starting off the frame with a leadoff single before a two-run home run by Harrison Povey put the home team up 8-5. FGCU would add four more in the bottom of the sixth, with a solo home run and a three-run double breaking open the game and giving the Eagles a 12-5 lead. They would add one more run in the frame to take a 13-5 lead, which would be the final.
