The Minnesota women's cross country team will take part in the Big Ten Championships this Sunday. Action will get underway at 11:45 a.m .CST on the campus of the University of Illinois, who are the host school this year for the first time since 2001.
A Year Ago
The Golden Gophers finished third overall, with 90 team points. Senior All-American Stephanie Price took second overall with a time of 19:55.5. Sophomore Missa Varpness was 11th overall with a time of 20:38.4 and Ashlie Decker finished in 19th for the Gophers after covering the course in 20:52.6. Nikki Swenson who is a Student Assitant Coach this season ran a 20:45.3 and finished 13th overall.
Last Time we Were Big Ten Champs
Minnesota will look to climb back to the top of the pack on Sunday. The Gophers last won the Big Ten Championship in 2008, to claim back-to-back titles after winning it in 2007 as well. Minnesota collected 63 points and edge Wisconsin (67) by just four points to claim the title.
Four Big Ten Conference members are currently ranked in the top 30 in the latest USTFCCCA Division I Cross Country Rankings. No.15 Michigan State, No.19 Michigan, No. 26 Penn State and No. 27 Iowa represent the conference.
All-Conference Selection Process
All-Conference Teams will be announced at the conclusion of the race. First Team (places 1-7) members will receive awards; Second Team (places 8-14) members will receive certificates, while the top three individuals will receive medals.
Coverage of the Big Ten Championships
The Big Ten Network will be on hand providing coverage once again this year. It will air on Friday November 11 at 11 a.m. central.
Price Dominates Big Ten Runner of the Week Titles for 2011
Senior All-American Stephanie Price was voted Big Ten Runner of the Week after the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. As of this week the award for runner of the week is done for the season and Price was honored three times this season, which was the most by anyone in the Big Ten Conference. For her career, Price has earned this award five times.
The Gophers will next be running at the 2011 NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday November 12, in DeKalb, Ill. Northern Illinois will be hosting this year's event where 33 Midwest Division I cross country programs will compete.
