Gophers Remain Atop Midwest Rankings
Sept. 17, 2013
NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its first regular season Division I Regional Cross Country Rankings and National Coaches Poll this week. Minnesota remained No. 1 in the Midwest Region but slipped to No. 20 in the national poll.
The top three teams in the Midwest Region held steady from the USTFCCCA preseason rankings, as the Gophers are followed by Oklahoma State and defending regional champion Iowa State. Fourth-ranked Northwestern climbed one place ahead of Tulsa in the most recent poll to round out the top five.
Nationally, No. 1 Providence, No. 2 Florida State, No. 3 Oregon and No. 4 Duke remained atop the coaches poll. After receiving the No. 19 ranking in the preseason poll, the Gophers flipped places with Vanderbilt and fell one spot to No. 20. Minimal movement occurred overall as the main section of the cross country season is still a couple weekends away. No. 27 BYU was the lone team to break into the top 30 after opening the season unranked.
The USTFCCCA releases regional rankings on Mondays during the regular season with coaches polls to follow on Tuesdays.
Minnesota is off this weekend in preparation for the 28th annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 28. The meet begins with the Suzy Wilson Women's Maroon III (Division III) Competition at 9 a.m. at Les Bolstad Course. The Gopher women race at 1:10 p.m. in the Jack Johnson Women's Gold (Division I) Competition.
