Sept. 13, 2012
What: SDSU Classic
When: Friday, Sept. 14 at 6:15 p.m.
Where: Edgebrook Golf Course (Brookings, S.D.)
Distance: 5,000 meters
The Golden Gopher cross country team will travel to its first road meet of the year this Friday, following the intrasquad meet and Oz Memorial at home the past two weekends. Minnesota will have 12 runners competing.
Volunteer assistant head coach Sarah Hesser said that the Gophers will use this race to experiment, and to try keeping the group together at the front of the pack. Because it is a shorter race, and because of the experimental attitude, the coaches would like the top handful of runners to start fast.
“They need to get ready for big meets later in the season,” Hesser said. “They will need to go out early in those meets.”
Since the SDSU Classic is the Gophers’ first meet away from home, it is an opportunity for them to practice their routines for away races.
Junior Laura Docherty (featured here in the Minnesota Daily) won the Gophers’ first two races of the season, with sophomore Molly Kayfes coming in second both times. The Minnesota coaches will look for continued success from the top runners, but will also use this meet and next week’s UW-Eau Claire Blugold Invite to help determine who will race at bigger meets later in the season.
