Sophomore Stephanie Price took the lead early then cruised to the individual title at the Minnesota Intrasquad Meet at Les Bolstad Golf Course on Saturday. Price covered the 5-kilometer course in a time of 18 minutes, 25.1 seconds to win by over 43 seconds.
Price’s maroon team fell short in the team standings, dropping a 26-33 decision to the rival gold team, and was awarded the famous runner-up Charley the Fish trophy.
Senior Nikki Swenson topped the effort for the winning gold team with a second-place showing in a time of 19:08.7. Two freshmen followed with Missa Varpness, a redshirt freshman, in third in 19:11.6 and true rookie Ashlie Decker in fourth in 19:12.5. Senior Katie Dyson rounded out the top five with a time of 19:13.6.
“We were pleased to see that everyone finished in a time lower than the 23:30 mark,” said assistant head coach Sarah Hesser. “I don’t think we’ve ever seen that for an intrasquad. It says something about the training our team is doing.”
A total of 43 Gophers competed in the race.
Minnesota opens its regular season next Friday (Sept. 10), when the Gophers host the Oz Memorial Run. The race begins at 5 p.m.
