The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has ranked the Golden Gophers No. 27 nationally in its preseason poll, released today.
The USTFCCCA picked Oregon as the No. 1 team in the poll with 345 points, although No. 2 Washington received more first-place votes (five).
Four Big Ten teams are listed among the top 30 in the preseason poll, with Michigan coming in at No. 12, Michigan State at No. 17, the Gophers at No. 27, and Wisconsin at No. 29.
Minnesota returns six of seven runners who competed at the NCAA Championships last fall in Ashlie Decker, Molly Kayfes, Maggie Bollig, Katie Moraczewski, Laura Docherty and Cassy Opitz. The Gophers finished 27th at the 2011 NCAA meet.
The Gophers will kick off the 2012 season with an intrasquad meet this Saturday, Sept. 1, at 9:30 a.m. at Les Bolstad Golf Course.
