The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has ranked the Golden Gophers third in the Midwest region in its preseason poll released today.
The USTFCCCA picked Iowa State and Oklahoma State to finish in the top two slots. The preseason top three matches the results from the 2011 NCAA Midwest Region Championships. Then-senior Stephanie Price led the Gophers and the rest of the Big Ten with a sixth-place finish. The rest of Minnesota’s regional competitors—Ashlie Decker, Molly Kayfes, Katie Moraczewski, Rachel Drake, Cassy Opitz, and Laura Docherty—all return in 2012, along with Maggie Bollig, who ran at the NCAA Championships. Minnesota won three consecutive regional titles in 2007, 2008, and 2009.
The Gophers will kick off the fall with their intrasquad meet this Saturday, Sept. 1, at 9:30 a.m. at Les Bolstad Golf Course. They will join the Gopher men’s team for the Oz Memorial the following Friday, Sept. 7, also at Les Bolstad.
