The Minnesota women’s cross country team will open the 2009 season with two home meets, the second being the annual jewel of the schedule – the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 26. The Golden Gophers, the two-time defending Big Ten champions, report to training camp the last week of August.
The first unofficial meet of the season is always the battle for Charlie the Fish in the annual intrasquad meet set for Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Les Bolstad Cross Country Course in Falcon Heights.
The season will be kicked off with the annual hosting of the Oz Memorial Run, this year being run on a Friday – Sept. 11 – due to the opening of TCF Bank Stadium the following day.
The 24th Annual Roy Griak Invitational takes place on Saturday, Sept. 26. The new addition to this prestigious event this year is a Goldy’s Kids Run.
Minnesota will field the largest squad in the nation with a roster numbering around 50 student-athletes. Meets around the Midwest such as the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invitational (Oct. 2), South Dakota State Invitational (Oct. 3), Minnesota-Duluth Pine Hills Invitational (Oct. 10) and the Wisconsin-LaCrosse Tori Neubauer Invitational (Oct. 17) will give the Gophers plenty of competition opportunities.
The Gophers’ top performers will travel to the Pre-NCAA Meet in Terre Haute, Ind., on Oct. 17, before hitting the championship portion of the season on Sunday, Nov. 1, with the Big Ten Conference Championships hosted in 2009 by Penn State.
The running community will once again have the opportunity to compete on the Les Bolstad Course at the Jack’s Run (Oct. 24) and the Rocky’s Run (Nov. 8).
Missouri State will play host to the 2009 NCAA Midwest Region Championships on Saturday, Nov. 14. Indiana State once again hosts the NCAA Championships, set for Monday, Nov. 23.
