February 6 marked National Signing Day, and Golden Gopher track and field/cross country has welcomed a group of exciting new recruits signing their National Letter of Intent (NLI) and Acceptance of Admission for the 2013-14 season. On Feb. 6 and after, GopherSports.com has updated this page with the latest information on Minnesota's signing class.

Madeline Strandemo (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South HS) - Signed Acceptance of Admission
Madeline Strandemo won the 800 meters (2:17.34) at this year's North Dakota Division A state meet. She also finished sixth in the 1,600m and the 4x400m relay. The all-state cross country performer (third in 2012) was also a basketball standout for Fargo South.
Laura Werking (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East HS) - Signed Acceptance of Admission
Laura Werking is part of Brookfield East's school record-holding 4x800-meter relay team that earned a state meet berth in 2010. She was the Greater Metro Confernce indoor two-mile champion that same year. Werking is also a triathlete and a standout swimmer.
Nicole Heitzman (Andover, Minn./Andover HS) - Signed Acceptance of Admission
Three-time Minnesota all-state cross country runner Nicole Heitzman will join the Gopher distance group next season. Heitzman's résumé includes two conference titles, a fourth-place state finish and two seventh-place state finishes. She also competed in the 3,200 meters in the state track and field meet.
Annie Haakenstad (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) - Signed Acceptance of Admission
Annie Haakenstad is a two-time all-conference honoree and state meet participant in track. She helped Minnetonka's 4x400-meter relay team to all-state honors in 2011. Haakenstad specializes in the mid-distance events, but ranges all the way from the 200 meters (within the 4x200m relay) to the 1,600m. She also competed in cross country, lettering as a senior. Haakenstad was a high school teammate of current Gopher Megan Bailey.
Titania Markland (St. Mary, Jamaica/St. Mary HS)
After running the short sprint events during her first two years of high school, Titania Markland switched her focus to mid-distance races. The change paid off, as last year she posted a personal best of 54.86 in the 400 meters. She ran for Jamaica at the 2012 Central American and Caribbean Games, finishing fifth in the 800 meters in 2:10.84. Markland recently won the Class One 400m, 800m and 1,500m (with a meet record time of 4:56.70) at the Eastern Secondary Schools' Sports Association/Jamaica National Building Society Track and Field Championships. She holds school records in the 400 and 800 meters. Her 800m PR of 2:08.16 qualified her for the recent CARIFTA Games in the Bahamas, where she won bronze.
Amelia Barczi (Madison, Wis./Madison West HS) – Signed Acceptance of Admission
Amelia Barczi has been a state competitor in both track and swimming, but has chosen to compete in track and field as a Golden Gopher next season. Barczi competed in the Wisconsin Division 1 meet in the 800 meters and 4x800-meter relay. She is a Big Eight Conference champion in both events, and school record-holder in the 4x800.
Sarah Klecker (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS) - Signed Acceptance of Admission
Sarah Klecker is a cross country and distance runner. She earned all-state honors in track and all-conference honors in cross country in 2009. Klecker was part of a Lake Conference champion team her freshman year.
Paige D'Heilly (Coon Rapids, Minn./Coon Rapids HS) - Signed Acceptance of Admission
Paige D'Heilly will join the Gopher distance group next season. She was a Minnesota state cross country competitor, finishing 11th in the 2011 Class AA meet. She has a 4,000-meter cross country PR of 15:08. On the track, she finished fourth at the Section 4AAA True Team meet in both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters in 2012.
Violet Weibel (La Crosse, Wis./La Crosse Central HS) - Signed Acceptance of Admission
Another distance runner, Violet Weibel has competed at the Wisconsin Division 1 state meets in both track and cross country. She won both the 1,600 and 3,200 meters to help her track team win the 2012 Mississippi Valley Conference championship. Weibel competed at the Footlocker Midwest Region Championships this past cross country season.
Natalie Broome (Somerset, Wis./Somerset HS) - Signed Acceptance of Admission
Natalie Broome will join the Gopher sprints group next season. As a junior, she competed at the Wisconsin Division 2 state meet in three events. She finished fourth in the 4x100-meter relay, fifth in the 200-meter dash and eighth in the 100-meter dash. Broome holds the Somerset record in the 200 with a time of 25.88 seconds.
Tess Wasowicz (Palatine, Ill./Palatine HS)
A two-time Illinois all-state cross country performer, Tess Wasowicz finished 11th at 2012 Class 3A state meet with a PR of 16:54 in the 3-mile race. On the way to state, she won her second regional championship and finished fifth at the sectional to earn her third all-sectional medal. Wasowicz was part of a state title, four regional titles and three sectional titles with Palatine. She went on to finish 17th at the 2012 Nike Cross Nationals Midwest Regional (18:56.30). On the track, Wasowicz runs on Palatine's 4x800-meter relay team that has finished in the top four at three state meets. She posted a 1,600m time of 5:02.10 at the 2012 state meet. She was a 2012 Mid-Suburban League champion in the 800m, 1,600m and 4x400m relay, and a sectional champion in the 1,600m, 4x400m relay, and 4x800m relay.
Allie Heifort (Bemidji, Minn./Bemidji HS)
Allie Heifort will join the Gopher throws group next season. At the 2012 Minnesota Class 2A state meet, she placed seventh in discus with a personal and school record of 136-9, and 10th in shot put (38-6 1/4). She was the section discus champion (136-3) and shot put runner-up (38-11 1/4) at the Section 8AA meet. Heifort's shot put PR is 39-3. She is also a volleyball and hockey player at Bemidji. Her older brother, Ernie, plays football for the Gophers.
Alex Flucke (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon HS)
Alex Flucke has already posted some collegiate-level pole vault numbers, and has won two Wisconsin Division 1 state titles. In 2012, she and current Gopher Cami Gilson both tied the state meet record of 12-6, and Flucke won on a tiebreaker. Flucke also won over Gilson in 2011, and was third in 2010. She set a personal record of 12-10 at the 2012 regional meet. Flucke's older sister, Melissa, is currently a high jumper for the Gophers.
Nicolle Murphy (Arkansas City, Kan./Arkansas City HS)
Nicolle Murphy has excelled in track and field for Arkansas City after making the switch from softball, where she had set the school record for homeruns. Murphy was the 2012 USTFA Junior Olympics javelin gold medalist with a throw of 149-10. She set a personal record of 150-0 at her 2012 high school regional meet before finishing second at the Kansas Class 5A state meet. Murphy won javelin at the USATF Missouri Valley Championship. She was the AVCTL league champion in both javelin and triple jump, and holds the school triple jump record (35-5 3/4).
Danielle Anderson (Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS)
Danielle Anderson is one of Minnesota's top distance runners in her class. Last fall, her individual second-place finish (14:06.5) led Eagan to a second-place finish at the Class 2A cross country state meet. Anderson won the Section 3AA title by 37 seconds on the way to state. She also set the South Suburban Conference record with a winning time of 14:04. Anderson finished 66th at the 2012 Nike Cross Nationals. She is already familiar with Minnesota's Roy Griak Invitational, having finished fourth in 2011 and third in 2012 in the high school race. On the track, she finished second in the 3,200 meters with a personal record of 10:35.06 and fifth in the 1,600 meters at the state meet as a junior. Anderson set her 1,600m PR of 5:01.01 at the Section 3AA meet. At the New Balance Outdoor Nationals, she finished second in the 5,000m with a PR of 16:43.65.
