The Golden Gopher cross country team finished fourth at the Big Ten Championships in East Lansing, Mich. As she has all season, Laura Docherty paced the team. She finished ninth individually.
The Gophers’ fourth-place finish matched their ranking entering the meet. With 134 points, they came in behind Michigan (55), Michigan State (75), and Penn State (96).
"You always want to beat people," assistant coach Sarah Hesser said. "We were hoping to pick off a few other teams, but we certainly didn't underperform."
Docherty will earn All-Big Ten Second Team honors with her ninth-place showing. Her time of 20:35.4 just edged out Michigan State’s Amanda Eccleston (20:35.5). Docherty put herself in the top group of runners right from the start.
"She did a heck of a job," Hesser said. "She got passed by a few kids at the end, but she has come so far since the start of her career. She's making strides every meet, and she has good racing sense. She could have a chance to race some of the same girls at the national meet."
Molly Kayfes (21:00.7) and Katie Moraczewski (21:01.0) finished less than a second apart in 26th and 27th. The pair worked well together, but ended up in front of the second pack when the top group split. Ashlie Decker and Maggie Bollig also finished close together to round out the Gopher scorers.
"We maybe went out a little too hard at the start," Hesser said. "But I'm proud of the way the girls ran. We will need to tweak a few things for regionals, but nothing drastic."
