The Minnesota women’s cross country team finished second this afternoon at the Tori Neubauer Invitational with 58 points. Five Gophers finished in the top 15 in the 23 team field that saw some very windy conditions, which slowed the course up a little bit.
Senior Danielle LeBreck covered the 6-kilometer course at the Maple Grove Golf Course in West Salem, Wis., in ninth place, with a time of 22:46.3.
Assistant coach Sarah Hesser was thrilled with her senior captain's performance today, as it was her best yet.
"She (LeBreck) raced intelligently early and closed very well to lead this group," said Hesser. "This was the best cross country race of her career as a Gopher."
Right behind LeBreck were sophomores Stephanie Solfelt, who finished in tenth with at time of 22:48.1 and Jamie Vandenberg at 11th, in 22:49.4. The fourth scorer for the Gophers was sophomore Jessica Schmidt who ran a 22:53.5 to place 13th. Rounding out the top five for Minnesota was sophomore Kaitlin Mincke, who finished 15th in 23:01.5.
Completing the Gophers’ top seven was redshirt freshman Chelsea Pettit in 20th place with a time of 23:14.7 and senior Jenna Lewein in 29th, with at time of 23:28.5.
"We were very pleased with the efforts today" said Hesser. "It was a windy day and a slow course, but every athlete really stuck their nose in there and fought the whole way. They raced well as a team and used that energy to pick eachother up throughout the race."
27th year Head Coach Gary Wilson was also happy after the Gophers second place finish today.
"We were very pleased with the great effort our kids showed today," said Wilson.
Minnesota will next race on Saturday October 22, when they host the Jack’s Run at 10 a.m. This race will take place at Les Bolstad Golf Course and is a fundraiser in memory of long time Gopher equipment manager Jack Johnson. The race is a 6k and open to the public. All proceeds go to the Jack Johnson Scholarship and the Angel Network. The following weekend the Gophers head to the 2011 Big Ten Championship on Sunday, October 30 at the University of Illinois Arboretum. The Gophers finished third overall in 2010.
