The Golden Gophers recorded a perfect team score of 15 to win the SDSU Classic in Brookings, S.D., Friday night. The first nine finishers in the 5K race wore the Maroon and Gold.
Sophomore Molly Kayfes led the way with a time of 17:15.82. Runner-up Laura Docherty (17:22.85) was followed closely by Katie Moraczewski (17:24.01). Ashlie Decker and Maggie Bollig rounded out the top five. Kayfes ran a strong race and pulled away from Docherty toward the end.
“I felt like, this race, I wanted to keep the gap between Laura Docherty and me closer,” Kayfes said. “We all wanted to work together and push each other.”
Volunteer assistant head coach Sarah Hesser said that, due to the 80-degree heat at race time, the team decided not to start quite as hard as originally planned. The Gophers did, however, stick to the most of their plan.
“I think the top group stayed together better than last week,” Hesser said. “They all raced well.”
With 11 runners in the top 12, Minnesota earned its second perfect score in as many meets. Hesser said the main focus, though, was to experiment and to experience a different, flatter course than the Gophers’ home of Les Bolstad Golf Course.
The Gophers who did not race tonight will compete at the Blugold Invite in Eau Claire, Wis., on Sept. 21. Minnesota hosts the 27th annual Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 29 at Les Bolstad.
