Dixon, Wittman Named All-Americans

Dec. 18, 2013

University of Minnesota volleyball standouts Tori Dixon and Ashley Wittman capped off their collegiate careers as All-Americans, announced today by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Dixon a first-team selection and Wittman a second-team honoree will be recognized at the AVCA banquet this Friday at the Final Four in Seattle.

The duo marks the 10th time in the past 12 years a Golden Gopher has received All-America status and the 24th and 25th honors in school history. It's the second-straight year Minnesota has had a first-team All-American as right-side hitter Katherine Harms accomplished the feat in 2012. Adrianna Nora was also named an All-America honorable mention.

Ashley Wittman and Tori Dixon earned All-American honors.

Dixon, a 6-foot, 3-inch middle blocker, earned her second All-America straight All-America honor, with the first last year on the second team. An All North Region selection, Dixon was named a unanimous All-Big Ten selection. In her career, Dixon was named a three-time All-Big Ten selection, twice as a unanimous pick, while she was also named to the All-Freshman team in 2010. As a senior, Dixon led the Gophers in sets played (125), kills (457), kills per set (3.66), hitting percentage (.399), total blocks (161), blocks per set (1.29) and points (570.5). In league action, Dixon had 248 kills to average 3.31 per set and produced 1.31 blocks per set. Dixon led the Gophers in kills and blocks 18 times this season and received five Big Ten weekly awards. Making her mark in the Gopher record books, Dixon ranks fifth all time in total blocks (507), the best career hitting percentage (.369) and ninth all-time in career kills (1,479).

Wittman, a 6-foot outside hitter, earns her second All-America citation after receiving the honor as a sophomore. Named All-North Region, Wittman was named a unanimous All-Big Ten selection for the second time in her career after a spot on the All-Freshman Team in 2010. As a senior, Wittman ranked second on the team in kills (423), kills per set (3.41) and points (477) and first in attempts (1062) and digs (425). Playing six-rotations, Wittman also led Minnesota with 16 double-doubles. In the NCAA Regional Semifinal, Wittman earned NCAA All-Tournament honors when she produced a match-best 17 kills and 12 digs for a Gopher-best 17.5 points. Named the Big Ten Player of the Week twice this season, Wittman also received one defensive player of the week honor and led the Gophers in match kills 12 times and in digs 19 times. Wittman ranks sixth in Minnesota history in career kills (1,778) and fourth in career digs (1,510).
