AVCA All-America Release
The University of Minnesota had three individuals garner All-America honors, announced today by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Freshman opposite hitter Stephanie Samedy (Clermont, Fla.) was named a First Team All-American, junior setter Samantha Seliger-Swenson (Minnetonka, Minn.) was named a Second Team All-American and sophomore outside hitter Alexis Hart (Kansas City, Mo.) was named a Third Team All-American. Senior middle blocker Molly Lohman garnered All-America honorable mention for the second-straight season. It’s the first honor for both Samedy and Hart and third All-America accolade for Seliger-Swenson.
Samedy is the first in program history to become a First Team All-American as a true freshman. Seliger-Swenson was the last Gopher freshman to receive All-America honors in 2015 and was on the second team.
The AVCA North Region Freshman of the Year, Samedy was also named a unanimous All-Big Ten selection and was a part of the All-Big Ten Freshman team. In her rookie season, Samedy played in all 34 matches and 118 sets. Paving the way for the Gopher offense, Samedy had a team-best 478 kills, averaged 4.05 kills per set, hit .303 and added a team-best 1,203 attempts. Posting 15 double-doubles this season, Samedy led the Gophers in match kills 24 of 34 times this season and 22 of 34 times in match points. Her 4.05 kills per set ranked second among Big Ten hitters and averaged 3.91 kps against Big Ten opponents. Defensively, Samedy ranked second on the team in digs (333) and digs per set (2.82) and added 87 blocks (0.74 bps). She was named the Most Valuable Player in two preseason tournaments this year, and received all-tournament team honors in three. In just four months with the Gophers, Samedy was the ESPNW National Player of the Week once and the Big Ten and Freshman of the Week twice this season.
Seliger-Swenson received her third-straight All-America award, being named a second and first team selection in 2015 and 2016. For the third-straight year, she was named to the All-North Region and selected and All-Big Ten selection. Seliger-Swenson averaged 12.21 assists per set her junior season, which ranked second nationally and first in the Big Ten. She aided the Gophers to hit .285 as a team as they produced 14.69 kills per set. Seliger-Swenson had 14 double-doubles on the season and ranked third on the team in digs (317) and digs per set (2.69) and second on the team in assists. The only junior in Division I to register over 4,000 career assists, Seliger-Swenson now has 4,416 career assists, which ranks seventh in school history. A five-time Big Ten Setter of the Week, Seliger-Swenson averaged 12.23 assists per set in conference play and helped the Gophers hit .280 in league action. She was also named a Preseason All-Big Ten selection this year.
Hart was named an All-Big Ten selection this season after she garnered All-Big Ten Freshman honors in 2016. She finished the year with 446 kills, averaged 3.78 kills per set and hit .278 in 1,105 attempts. The three-rotation outside also averaged 1.04 digs per set and had 23 aces, which ranked fourth on the team.
