Trio All-Region; McCutcheon Coach of Year
Dec. 10, 2013
The University of Minnesota was well represented in the AVCA All-Region honors as three Golden Gophers earned All North Region and head coach Hugh McCutcheon was named North Region Coach of the Year. Tori Dixon, Adrianna Nora and Ashley Wittman were three of 14 named to the all-region team.
Dixon and Wittman were both named unanimous All-Big Ten selections earlier this year. As a senior, Dixon leads the Gophers in sets played (122), kills (445), kills per set (3.65), hitting percentage (.398), total blocks (159) and points (556.5). Wittman ranked second on the team in kills (406), kills per set (3.36) and points (459.5) and first in attempts (1019) and digs (413). A six-rotation player, Wittman also led Minnesota with 15 double-doubles. Right-side hitter Nora ranks third on the team in kills (215), has played in 90 sets and enters the NCAA regional competition with a .312 hitting clip.
McCutcheon is in his second season as the Golden Gopher head coach. After coaching the United States Olympic Team to a silver medal in 2012, McCutcheon joined the Gophers in August of 2012. At the helm of the Gopher program, McCutcheon led the Gophers to an Elite Eight appearance in 2012 and is taking his 2013 squad to a Sweet 16 appearance this weekend.
The No. 10 seed Golden Gophers take on No. 7 seed Stanford, Friday night at 6 p.m., CT. The match will be held in Lexington, Ky. If the Gophers win, they take on the winner of Michigan State/Penn State in the Elite Eight Saturday afternoon.
