The University of Minnesota had three individuals land a spot on the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association All-Region Team, announced today by the organization. Alexis Hart, Stephanie Samedy and Samantha Seliger-Swenson received All-North Region honors, while Molly Lohman was named an honorable mention.
Samedy was also named the North Region Freshman of the Year, the third-straight Golden Gopher to receive the honor. Seliger-Swenson and Hart were both named North Region Freshmen of the Year during their rookie seasons.
Hart, a 6-foot sophomore outside hitter, was named an All-Big Ten selection this season. She ranks second on the team in kills (433), kills per set (3.77) and attempts (1067 in 115 sets played. The three-rotation outside also averages 1.06 digs per set, has 23 aces and 53 blocks. Against ACVA’s Top 50 opponents, Hart averaged 4.13 kills per set and 4.51 points per set. A Preseason All-Big Ten, Hart averaged 4.10 kills per set against Big Ten opponents this season, hit .302 and had 287 kills against league teams. She was a part of two all-tournament teams in the preseason and was named the Big Ten Player of the Week once this year. It marks the second-straight year Hart has been named to the All-North Region team.
Samedy, a 6-foot, 2-inch freshman opposite hitter, garnered unanimous All-Big Ten honors, only one of two rookies named to the list. She leads the Gophers with 465 kills, averaged 4.04 per set and is hitting .304. A six-rotation player, Samedy is also averaging 2.83 digs per set and has 83 blocks and 11 aces. Against the AVCA’s Top 50 teams, Samedy hit .281 in 69 sets and had 268 kills. She also averaged 3.88 kills per set and 3.03 digs per set among those opponents. In conference action, she had 274 kills, averaged 3.91 kills per set, hit .302 and had 204 digs. She was named the Most Valuable Player in two preseason tournaments this year, and received all-tournament team honors in three. In just four months with the Gophers, Samedy was the ESPNW National Player of the Week once and the Big Ten and Freshman of the Week twice this season.
Seliger-Swenson, a 5-foot, 11-inch setter, has landed a spot on the All-North Region team for the third-straight year. A unanimous All-Big Ten honoree, Seliger-Swenson ranked second in the nation in assists per set (12.18) and fourth in overall assists this season (1,405). As the starting setter, Minnesota is hitting .287 as a team this season. Running a 5-1 offense, Seliger-Swenson also has 309 digs, ranks second on the team in aces (33) and has 54 blocks. She also has 14 double-doubles on the season. A five-time Big Ten Setter of the Week, Seliger-Swenson averaged 12.23 assists per set in conference play and helped the Gophers hit .280 in league action. The only current junior to hold over 4,000 in all of Division I NCAA, Seliger-Swenson hold 4,380 career assists. This season, Seliger-Swenson was named to three all-tournament teams and was also a Preseason All-Big Ten.
Lohman, a 6-foot, 3-inch senior middle blocker landed her second-straight AVCA All-North Region honorable mention. In 112 sets played for the Gophers this season, Lohman leads the team in blocks (149), blocks per set (1.33) and aces this season (35). Against Big Ten opponents, Lohman hit .385 and ranked second among Big Ten opponents in blocks per set (1.42). Lohman also has 218 kills for the Gophers this season, averages 1.95 kills per set and is hitting .385.
