Freshman outside hitter Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.) received Big Ten Volleyball Player of the Week honors for a third time this season on Monday, Nov. 12. Dieter joined Megan Hodge (Penn State 2006), Nicole Fawcett (Penn State 2005) and Stacey Gordon (Ohio State 2001) as one of only four freshmen in the conference’s history to receive Big Ten Player of the Week honors three times in a single-season.
Dieter was also named Big Ten Player of the Week on Sept. 3 and Sept. 17. It was the first time in school history that a Minnesota freshman received player of the week honors three times in a season. Dieter joins Nicole Branagh (1999 & 2000) as the only player in school history to receive Big Ten Player of the Week honors three times in one season.
This past week, she averaged 6.71 kpg, hit .367 and had 2.14 dpg in a week where Minnesota won a pair of road matches against Indiana and Purdue. With the victories, the Golden Gophers moved into a three-way tie for third place in the Big Ten at 8-8 with Purdue and Michigan. Dieter had a career-high 23 kills and hit .409 in a three-game victory over the Hoosiers on Nov. 9. The next night, she recorded a new career-high with 24 kills to go with 13 digs in a four-game victory over the Boilermakers.
Over the course of the past weekend, Dieter had 47 kills to move to 332 on the season. Her 332 kills are currently the seventh-most (since 1982) by a Golden Gopher freshman in school history. Last week, she became the eighth Minnesota freshman (since 1982) to record 300 or more kills in a season, and the first since Jessica Byrnes had 359 in 2002 in her freshman campaign.
Dieter also enters the week with 236 digs this season. She is 64 digs from becoming the fourth freshman in school history (since 1982) to have 300 digs in her first year with the program. If Dieter reaches that mark, she would join Becky Lindberg (1989) as one of two freshman (since 1982) to record 300 kills and 300 digs in the same season.
Minnesota will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 16 when it hosts Michigan State at 7 p.m. The Golden Gophers will also face Northwestern on Saturday, Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. Friday’s match can be seen live in the Gold Zone. Both matches can be heard live on gophersports.com.
