The seventh-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (17-7, 8-4) lost in three sets to Ohio State (18-7, 6-6) by scores of 25-20, 25-19, 25-15 on Saturday, Oct. 31 at St. John Arena.
Minnesota was led by junior middle blocker Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) who hit .455 (12-2-22) with 12 kills and two blocks. Junior outside hitter Hailey Cowles (Eden Prairie, Minn.) had six kills and 10 digs, while Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) had six kills. Megan Wilson (Lincoln, Neb.) also had nine digs and three kills, while Taylor Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) had 31 assists and five digs on the night.
Ohio State outhit Minnesota .294 to .170, and had 45 kills to 33 for the Golden Gophers. The Buckeyes also had 44 digs to 39, and outblocked the Golden Gophers 6.0-to-3.0. Ohio State also had six service aces to three for Minnesota.
Minnesota fell behind 10-0 in the first set, but the Golden Gophers scored nine of the next 10 points and cut it to 11-9 on a solo block by Gibbemeyer. The Buckeyes pushed their lead back to 19-14. Minnesota cut it to three points at 22-19 on a kill by Gibbemeyer. However, the Buckeyes scored three of the final four points to take the first set 25-20.
Ohio State outhit Minnesota .130 to .114 in the first set, and had 15 kills to 10 for the Golden Gophers. Gibbemeyer led the Golden Gophers with six kills and hit .500 (6-1-10) in the set.
The Buckeyes jumped out to an 11-7 lead in the second set, but Gibbemeyer and Cowles delivered consecutive kills to make it 11-9. Ohio State answered with five of the next seven points to take a 16-11 lead. Harms answered with a kill and Carico delivered a service ace to make it 16-13. The Buckeyes responded with a 5-0 run to move ahead 21-13.
Minnesota cut the lead to 23-17, but Ohio State made it set point at 24-17. Wilson and Gibbemeyer fought off a pair of set points as each collected a kill to make it 24-19. Ohio State scored the next point on a service error to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Buckeyes hit .516 (18-2-31) in the second set, while Minnesota hit .314 (15-4-35). Ohio State also had 18 kills to 15 for the Golden Gophers. Cowles led the way with four kills in the set for the Golden Gophers.
Ohio State jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the third, but Filho and Love delivered consecutive kills to make it 9-6. The Buckeyes responded by scoring seven of the next nine points to take a 16-8 lead. The Golden Gophers scored two of the next three points to make it 17-10 on a kill by Gibbemeyer. Ohio State answered with four straight points to move ahead 21-10, and eventually moved on to a 25-15 victory in the third set.
Ohio State was led by Katie Dull who had 10 kills and 13 digs on the night, while Emily Danks hit .381 (9-1-21) with nine kills and a service ace. Ashley Hughes also had 37 assists, four kills, four digs and two solo blocks. Chelsea Noble and Sarah Mignin also had nine digs apiece.
Minnesota will be back in action when it hosts Indiana on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. That match will be streamed live on the BigTenNetwork.com. The Golden Gophers will also host Purdue on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 1 p.m. That match can be seen live on the Big Ten Network.
