1Senior opposite hitter Cassie Busse (Prior Lake, Minn.) was named Big Ten Volleyball Co-Player of the Week for Monday, Oct. 13. It marked the second straight week, a Minnesota player was named a Co-Big Ten Player of the Week.
Busse joined Erin Martin, who claimed the honors last week, as Golden Gophers who have claimed the honors in he 2003 season. She shared this week's honor with Lisa Argabright of Illinois.
It marked the third time in her career that Busse has claimed Big Ten Player of the Week honors. In 2002 she claimed the honors on Aug. 26 and Sept. 30. Busse joins Nicole Branagh (5), Andrea Gonzalez (4), Katrien DeDecker (3) and Stephanie Hagen (3) as the only Minnesota players to claim conference player of the week honors three or more times in a career.
This past week, Busse averaged 4.88 kills per game, 2.00 digs per game and 1.62 blocks per game in two wins over No. 21 Wisconsin and Iowa. In the match against the Badgers, Busse tied a career-high with 24 kills, had a season-high 13 digs and six blocks. In that match she had seven of the 24 kills in the deciding fifth game, tallying seven of the team's eight kills in the game. Busse also had 15 kills, a season high seven blocks and hit .448 in a three-game victory over Iowa. With 24 kills against Wisconsin, Busse moved to 10th on the Minnesota all-time kills list with 1,172.
Minnesota will continue its four-match road swing at Ohio State on Friday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. and then head to No. 13 Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.
