From her freshman year to her senior year, Maddie Beal has grown on and off the court both as a player and person. Being able to see the University of Minnesota Volleyball program blossom into what we know it as today, Beal has played a part in it’s transformation. Now a senior, the Colorado Springs, Colo., native has been named a co-captain and is ready to do whatever it takes to keep this program moving in the right direction.
Q: How would you describe your time here at Minnesota?
Maddie Beal: There has definitely been a lot of changes, with myself and the team. The team has really grown over the past four years I have been here. There is just a different feel with the program and the culture, all for the better.
Q: What are your post graduation plans?
MB: I would like to go play pro. I will be here the whole year through spring and possibly summer. After that, I would like to go play professionally. I will see where that take me, I would love to play for a few years.
Q: What are you most looking forward to this season?
MB: Everything. This year has just felt different than any other year. I’m really excited to see how things will fall together now that we're in the Big Ten season. It is going to be really interesting this season because I think there are a lot of teams in the Big Ten who are really good this year.
Q: The team lost some big players after last season, how have you guys been able to fill in the gaps?
MB: We did lose some pretty big players, but I think we have done really well with the freshman who have come in. I don’t think it has been a problem at all replacing them, I think it has been a pretty smooth transition with some coming in and playing right away. The upperclassmen on our team have also been stepping up and stepping into different rolls.
Q: What are some individual goals you have for yourself?
MB: Just do anything I can to make the team better. I just want to help the team and be a good leader.
Q: What has been your favorite memory so far of Gopher Volleyball?
MB: Just coming in everyday to practice. It’s like my release after a long day at school. I just love the players we have had some really fun times at practice, whether it is funny moments or fun activities we do. Going to Japan and going to Hawaii, the cool trips we gone on have been great memories. The best is just being with the team.
Q: What does it mean to you to be named one of the teams’s co-captains?
MB: It is a really big honor. I think I have grown as a person since my freshman year and I’m a very different person than I was four years ago. I was very proud of myself because I didn’t expect it coming from where I was as a freshman or sophomore. It’s really cool, and it’s a good ending to my senior year.
