The Minnesota volleyball team (14-4, 5-1) is ranked No. 6 for the week of Oct. 12 in the AVCA poll. The Golden Gophers received 1,189 points this week in the poll.
It marks the first time that the Golden Gophers have been ranked in the top 10 for six weeks in a row since 2005, when they were in that position from the preseason poll until Oct. 10, 2005 for seven weeks. Minnesota has also been ranked in the last 24 top 25 polls. The Golden Gophers' school record came from Oct. 20, 2003 to Sept. 4, 2006 when they were ranked in 40 straight polls.
Last week, Minnesota won in four sets against Ohio State and lost in three sets to No. 1 Penn State. The lost to the Nittany Lions was the Golden Gophers' third to a top 3 team.
Minnesota is one of four Big Ten teams ranked in the top 25 this week. The Golden Gophers are joined by No. 1 Penn State, No. 10 Illinois and No. 11 Michigan. As a conference that Big Ten has the most teams in the top 10 with three. The conference also has four of the top 11 teams in the nation.
The Golden Gophers will be back in action when they face No. 10 Illinois on Friday, Oct. 16 at 6:30 p.m. That match will be in Assembly Hall as part of the "Midnight Madness" festivities at Illinois. Minnesota will also travel to Northwestern on Saturday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.
