EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Golden Gopher volleyball team swept Michigan State by scores of 15-7, 15-8, 15-6, in a Big Ten match Saturday night at Jenison Fieldhouse. Minnesota is 6-0 in Big Ten play for the first time in school history. The Gophers have won their last nine matches overall and improved to 15-3 overall. Minnesota, who won at Michigan on Friday, swept the Michigan road trip for the first time since 1994. "We continue to play outstanding volleyball," said Minnesota head coach Mike Hebert. "The Big Ten teams continue to throw challenges at us, and we have responded brilliantly at every chance. We played very well in every facet of the match tonight." Nicole Branagh smashed 13 kills and Yvonne Wichert pounded 11 kills to pace the Minnesota offense. The Gophers served nine aces, led by Lindsey Berg who had a season-high five aces. Minnesota led Michigan State in every statistical category, including a 46-35 advantage in kills and a .364-.153 edge in hitting percentage. Minnesota never trailed in the first game of the match. The Gophers broke a 3-3 tie with five consecutive points to take an 8-3 lead. Michigan State pulled to within three points at 10-7, but the Gophers scored the final five points to end the game. Minnesota hit an incredible .567 in the first game, tallying 19 kills with just two hitting errors. Wichert had seven kills in eight attempts to lead the Gophers. Michigan State scored four of the first five points of the second game. The Gophers responded with 10 of the next 12 points, seven off the serve of Branagh, to take an 11-6 advantage. Michigan State scored two of the next three points, but Berg closed out the game by serving the final three points, the last one coming on a service ace. The Gophers continued their dominant play in the third game, gradually building the lead for a 15-6 victory. The Gophers held the Spartans to a .000 hitting percentage in the final game. Charnette Fair had four kills and two blocks in the third game. The Gophers return home to the Sports Pavilion for a pair of matches next weekend. Minnesota hosts Indiana on Friday at 7 p.m., and Illinois on Saturday at 7 p.m.
