The Minnesota volleyball team (11-5, 5-1) moved up a spot to No. 23 in the CSTV/AVCA poll on Oct. 9. Minnesota picked had 277 points in this week’s poll, gaining 157 points from last week’s total of 120.
Minnesota has now been ranked in 65 of the last 73 top 25 polls dating back to the 2002 seasons. The Golden Gophers have now been ranked the last two weeks, moving up from No. 24 to 23 this week. Minnesota was ranked No. 22 in the preseason poll.
This past week, Minnesota went 1-1 to move to 5-1 in Big Ten play, which puts the Golden Gophers in a tied for second place with Purdue heading into the week. Minnesota became the first team to take a game from Penn State in Big Ten play since Oct. 28, 2005, as the Golden Gophers fell in four games to the Nittany Lions on Oct. 6. Minnesota also defeated No. 14 Ohio State in four games on Oct. 8.
There were five Big Ten teams ranked in the top 25 this week. Penn State was the highest ranked team at No. 2, followed by No. 9 Purdue, No. 14 Wisconsin and No. 16 Ohio State.
Minnesota will return home to face Indiana on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. The Golden Gophers will then face No. 9 Purdue at Williams Arena on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 7 p.m. That match will be broadcast on ESPN 2 on a tape-delayed basis on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 12 p.m.
