Volleyball Begins Four-Match Big Ten Road Swing at Iowa on Oct. 8

    The Minnesota volleyball team begins a tough four-match Big Ten road swing with a midweek match at Iowa on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m., followed by a match at No. 21 Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. Iowa comes into the week with a 5-9 overall record and is 0-4 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes dropped home matches to Illinois and Northwestern last week.Wisconsin heads into the week with an 11-4 overall record and is 3-1 in Big Ten play. After going 2-0 in its first home weekend, the Badgers went 1-1 this past weekend falling at Michigan State in four games, while rallying from a 2-1 deficit to win at Michigan on the road. Last season Minnesota swept both Iowa and Wisconsin in the regular season. It was Minnesota's first sweep over Wisconsin since 1995.

    For the first time in her career at Minnesota, Erin Martin was named Big Ten Player of the Week as she received co-player of the week honors with Erin Iceman of Penn State on Monday, Oct. 6. Martin became the first Golden Gopher this season to receive the honors, and joined Lindsey Taatjes and Cassie Busse as players on the current roster who have received the honors. Taatjes and Busse each won Big Ten Player of the Week twice in 2002. Martin averaged 5.29 kpg, 2.29 dpg and hit .369 on the week to help lead Minnesota to a 2-0 record over Northwestern and Illinois. In the Northwestern match she recorded only her second career double-double with 15 kills and a season-high 10 digs. Martin then paced Minnesota with 22 kills, along with hitting .373 in a four-game victory over Illinois on Oct. 4.
