Sophomore libero Christine Tan (Safety Harbor, Fla.) was named Big Ten Defensive Co-Player of the Week, along with Penn State’s Arielle Wilson on Monday, Oct. 1. Tan becomes the third Golden Gopher to receive the weekly honor since it began in 2005.
Paula Gentil received the honors twice in 2005 and Malama Peniata won it three times in 2006. It is also the sixth time a Golden Gopher has claimed it in the two-plus years of the weekly honor.
This past week, Tan averaged 6.67 dpg, 1.00 apg and 0.33 sapg. She had 16 digs and two service aces in a three-game victory at Iowa on Sept. 26. Tan also collected 24 digs and four assists in a three-game victory over No. 11 Michigan on Sept. 30. For the week, Minnesota held its opponents to a .087 hitting percentage.
In four Big Ten matches this year, Tan is second in conference play in digs per game at 5.67. She is also fifth overall in digs per game at 4.67 dpg.
