The Minnesota volleyball team makes its first, and possibly most difficult, road trip of the Big Ten campaign when it travels to No. 16 Ohio State on Friday, Oct. 1 at 6 p.m. and then to No. 4 Penn State on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 6 p.m. The Golden Gophers enter the two matches ranked No. 1 for a third consecutive week. Minnesota won three-game matches last week against Cincinnati, Michigan State and Michigan. With the victories over the Wolverines and Spartans, the Golden Gophers started out 2-0 in Big Ten play for the fifth time in six seasons. Ohio State also started 2-0 in Big Ten play last week and is 12-0 overall on the season. Penn State enters the week as one of four teams to start out 2-0 in Big Ten play last week as well, and is 11-0 on the season. Minnesota's match with Ohio State will be telecast on Fox Sports Net North on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m. The Golden Gophers will also have their match against Penn State webcast on gophersports.com.
Minnesota and Penn State will play each other in the highest ranked matchup in Big Ten history on Oct. 2. The Golden Gophers enter the week ranked No. 1, while the Nittany Lions are No. 4. Penn State has been involved in the two previous highest ranked matchups in Big Ten history. Those came on Oct. 10, 1998 when No. 2 Penn State took on No. 6 Wisconsin, and on Sept. 21, 1994 when No. 2 Penn State took on No. 6 Ohio State. This is Minnesota's third top 10 matchup in Big Ten play. There previous top 10 matchups came on Oct. 19, 2002 when the Golden Gophers were No. 9 and Penn State was No. 8, and on Oct. 28, 2000 when Wisconsin was No. 6 and they were No. 7.
