The eighth-ranked Golden Gophers will welcome North Carolina (4-4), TCU (9-1) and Winthrop (3-6) to the Sports Pavilion for the Gopher Invitational on Sept. 19-20.
North Carolina and Winthrop will open up the tournament on Friday, Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. Minnesota will face TCU on Sept. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The second day, on Saturday, Sept. 20, will begin with TCU facing North Carolina at 10 a.m. The Golden Gophers will face Winthrop in their second match of the tournament at 12:30 p.m.
The Gopher Invitational final session will begin with TCU facing Winthrop at 5 p.m. on Sept. 20. Minnesota will wrap up the tournament against North Carolina at 7:30 p.m.
In between sets two and three of Minnesota’s match against TCU on Friday, Sept. 19, gold medal winning USA Olympic Men’s Volleyball Coach Hugh McCutcheon will be honored by the Minnesota volleyball program.
On Saturday, Sept. 20, 1987 World Series MVP Frank Viola will sign autographs for 20 minutes at the promotions table in the Sports Pavilion, following the TCU-Winthrop match. Viola, whose daughter Kaley plays for Winthrop, will also be introduced prior to the Minnesota-North Carolina match at 7:30 p.m.
In between sets two and three of the Minnesota-North Carolina match, the program will honor former Golden Gopher Lindsey Berg, who claimed the silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games as one of the two setters on the team. Berg will also sign autographs following the match for 20 minutes.
