The 12th-ranked Minnesota volleyball team (6-1) defeated North Carolina Central (1-6) in three sets by scores of 25-12, 25-13, 25-15 at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Friday, Sept. 10.
Minnesota was led by Ashley Wittman (Shakopee, Minn.) who had nine kills, 11 digs and three blocks. Freshman Tori Dixon (Burnsville, Minn.) had eight kills and seven blocks in her first match as a middle blocker for the Golden Gophers.
Freshman Steffi Sooter (Santa Cruz, Calif.) started at libero and had a career-high 15 digs. Tabi Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) also had nine kills, six digs and two blocks, while Mia Tabberson (Muncie, Ind.) had 30 assists and a career-high four kills. Katherine Harms (Albertville, Minn.) had seven kills and four assists, while Brianna Haugen (Minneapolis, Minn.) had five kills and two blocks.
The Golden Gophers cruised to victory in the first set hitting .632 (14-2-19), while limiting North Carolina Central to a -.130 hitting percentage. Minnesota also limited the Eagles to a -.065 hitting percentage in the second set as well.
For the match, Minnesota hit .376 (42-10-85), and limited North Carolina Central to a -.056 hitting percentage. It was the second time this year that the Gopher limited an opponent to a negative hitting percentage. Minnesota also had 42 kills to 18 for the Eagles, and collected 46 digs to 28.
North Carolina Central was led by Belinda Behncke-Biney who had eight kills, six digs and two service aces. Sashalee Wallen also had five blocks, while Emanuelle Santos had six kills and four digs.
Minnesota will be in action next when it faces Delaware on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 11 a.m. (CT) and Duke at 6 p.m. (CT). Both matches can be heard live in the Gold Zone, and will be covered on the live blog on gophersports.com.
