Minnesota was 2-1 in the opening weekend of the 2001 season, defeating Radford and Virginia while losing to Stanford in the Jefferson Cup Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. The Cardinal is ranked ninth in this week's poll. Nebraska, despite having its 37-match winning streak stopped by Long Beach State last Saturday, remains the top team in the poll, followed by the 49ers. Other Big Ten teams that are ranked besides the Gophers are Wisconsin (3rd), Penn State (4th) and Ohio State (17th).
The Golden Gophers open their 2001 home season with a match against Marquette (2-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
