The Minnesota volleyball team (3-1) defeated Navy (1-2) in three sets by scores of 25-18, 25-16, 25-11 the Wesley Brown Fieldhouse on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
Minnesota was led by freshman Tabitha Love (Dauphin, Manitoba) who hit .562 (11-2-16) with 11 kills. Ariana Filho (Monument, Colo.) had seven kills in 13 swings to hit .538 on the night. Katherine Harms(St. Michael-Albertville, Minn.) also hit .750 (6-0-8) with six kills, while Hailey Cowles (Eden Prairie, Minn.) had six kills and a team-high five digs.
Lauren Gibbemeyer (St. Paul, Minn.) hit .667 (5-1-6) with five kills in one set, while freshman setter Mia Tabberson had 25 assists and three blocks in two sets.
Minnesota jumped out to an 11-8 lead, before Navy scored the next four points to take a 12-11 lead. The Golden Gophers responded with a 4-0 run paced by a pair of blocks by Harms and a kill and a block by Filho. The Midshipmen tied it at 15, but Minnesota scored nine of the next 10 points to make it set point at 24-16. Navy fought off two set points, but the Golden Gophers scored to win the first set 25-18.
In the second set, Minnesota jumped out to a 10-9 lead. The Golden Gophers ripped off nine of the next 10 points to take a 19-11 lead. Navy responded with four straight points to cut the lead to 19-15. Minnesota answered by scoring the final six points, and put away the set on consecutive kills by Love to win 25-16.
The Golden Gophers ran out to a 14-5 lead in the third set. After Navy cut the lead to 14-6, Minnesota scored five of the next six points and moved ahead 19-7 on consecutive kills by Brook Dieter (Bloomington, Minn.).
Navy cut it to 19-9, before the Golden Gophers scored five straight to make it match point at 24-9. After the Midshipmen made it 24-11, they committed a service error that gave Minnesota the three-set victory.
Navy was led by Carolyn Ewert who had six kills, two digs and a service ace. Meghan Carpenter also had seven kills on the night, while setter Jenny Rudewicz had 19 assists, four digs and three kills.
Minnesota will be back in action when it hosts the Diet Coke Classic. The Golden Gophers will host Auburn on Friday, Sept. 4 at 8 p.m. Minnesota will also face George Washington on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 10:30 a.m. and No. 12 Iowa State on Sept. 5 at 8 p.m. All three matches can be heard on the Gold Zone, and gophersports.com will also be blogging live throughout the Diet Coke Classic.
