Former Golden Gopher standout Lindsey Berg and the U.S. Olympic Women’s Volleyball Team defeated Cuba in three games by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-17 to advance to its first Gold Medal match since 1984.
Team USA avenged an earlier three-game defeat at the hands of Cuba during group play to advance to the Gold Medal match. The U.S. Olympic team will face the winner of the Brazil-China match (which takes place later today at 8 p.m. local time) in that match on Saturday, Aug. 23 at 8 p.m. (Beijing time).
With the victory over Cuba, Team USA clinched its first medal since they won the bronze in the 1992. The U.S. Olympic team has only played in the Gold Medal match on one occasion. That came when they lost to China to claim the silver medal during the 1984 Olympics.
