The Minnesota Golden Gophers volleyball team was picked to finish third in the Big Ten preseason coach’s poll, according to announcement on Wednesday, Aug. 16 by Big Ten officials.
Penn State was tabbed as the favorite to win the Big Ten by the coaches. Wisconsin was picked to finish second, while Ohio State was selected fourth. Rounding out the preseason coaches poll was Purdue at fifth, Michigan in sixth, Michigan State at seventh, Illinois in eighth, Northwestern at ninth, Iowa in 10th and Indiana at 11th.
Minnesota also had one player named to the Preseason All-Big Ten team, which was represented by players from eight different squads. Jessy Jones (Naperville, Ill.) received Preseason All-Big Ten honors for a second year in a row. Last year, Jones received Honorable-Mention All-Big Ten honors at the end of the season.
Rounding out this year’s preseason all-conference selections were Vicky Brown (Sr., MB, Illinois), Katie Bruzdzinski (Sr., OH, Michigan), Katie Johnson (Sr., OH, Michigan State), Danielle Meyer (Sr., MB, Ohio State), Nicole Fawcett (Jr., OH, Penn State), Christa Harmotto (Jr., MB, Penn State), Megan Hodge (So., OH, Penn State), Stephanie Lynch (Jr., MB, Purdue), Brittney Dolgner (So., OH, Wisconsin), Taylor Reineke (Sr., MB, Wisconsin) and Jackie Simpson (Sr., S, Wisconsin).
Jones joined Johnson, Meyer, Fawcett, Harmotto and Lynch as two-time preseason All-Big Ten team honorees.
Minnesota is coming off a 2006 season that saw the Golden Gophers finish 26-8, advance to a third NCAA Regional Final in four years and finish second in the Big Ten at 17-3.
On Friday, Aug. 24, Minnesota will open up the season at Notre Dame at 5 p.m. (CT). That start time was changed from 6 p.m. (CT) to 5 p.m. (CT) midway through the summer. Minnesota will return home on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m. to play its Alumni match.
