Former Gopher Lindsey Berg and future Gopher and current United States head coach Hugh McCutcheon went undefeated in Pool B play after wins against Serbia and Turkey.
With the wins, Team USA finishes pool competition with a 5-0 record heading into Tuesday's quarterfinal match. With win over Turkey, the US will have the overall No. 1 seed and will face the Dominican Republic. In pool competition, Team USA only dropped two sets (South Korea and Brazil) en route to five wins. Team USA held 15 points in pool play, while in Pool A, Russia had 14 points, followed by Italy with 13.
In Sunday's match against Turkey, USA won in three sets, 27-25, 25-16, 25-19. Although Berg left the third set due to an injury, Team USA went on to close the match with a 25-19 third-set win. On Friday, Team USA clinched the top spot in Pool B with a three-set win over Serbia by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-16.
