USA VOLLEYBALL RELEASE
Former Gopher volleyball player Paige Tapp (Stewartville, Minn.) was named one of 14 players that will represent Team USA at the Pan American Cup, June 17-25 in Peru. The trek marks Tapp’s first travel competition with USA’s senior national team. She made her senior national team debut against Canada on June 13, 2017.
Team USA is part of Group A with matches against Venezuela on June 17, Colombia on June 18, Puerto Rico on June 19, Mexico on June 20 and Argentina on June 21. Group B includes Canada, Chile, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Peru and Trinidad & Tobago. After an off day on June 22, the quarterfinal round will take the second- and third-place teams from both groups and play crossover matches to determine which two teams will advance to the June 24 semifinals to join the respective pool winners. The tournament concludes on June 25 with the medal-round matches and other classification matches.
The Pan Am Cup is in its 16th year as teams from NORCECA (North America, Central America and Caribbean) and South America confederations compete for the title. The Americans have won the event three of the past five years with mainly a younger roster to gain international experience. The Pan Am Cup has two six-team preliminary round pools that will play a full round-round schedule.
Team USA is looking for its fifth Pan Am Cup title, breaking a logjam with Cuba and Dominican Republic as teams with a tournament-best four titles in the previous 15 editions of the events. Dominican Republic has won two of the last three events.
Immediately after graduating from the University of Minnesota in December 2016, Tapp signed and competed in her first season of professional volleyball. She played her first pro campaign with Juncos Valencianas (Puerto Rico). With the team from January to May, Tapp helped Juncos to the league’s championship series. As a Gopher, Tapp was a two-time American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) All-American and a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American. She was also Minnesota’s first-ever Senior CLASS Award recipient, an honor given to one collegiate individual in each sport that represents the highest standards, athletically, academically and within her community. The Stewartville, Minn., native finished her career with 783 kills, hit .317 and had 495 career blocks.
