Minnesota Volleyball Announces 2007 Schedule
The Minnesota volleyball team has announced the 2007 season schedule according to Minnesota Head Coach Mike Hebert.
Minnesota will face 11 teams that made to the NCAA Tournament last year, including five non-conference opponents.
The Golden Gophers will start out the season when it travels to South Bend to face 2006 Tournament participant Notre Dame on Friday, Aug. 24. Minnesota will return home to host its Alumni Match on Sunday, Aug. 26 at 1 p.m.
Minnesota will host the Diet Coke Classic on Aug. 31-Sept. 2, and will invite one of the strongest fields in recent years as 2006 National Runner-up Stanford, 2006 Regional Semifinal participant San Diego and 2006 NCAA participant Ohio University will make up the field.
The Golden Gophers will face Ohio University on Friday, Aug. 31 at 7:30 p.m. Minnesota will then take on Stanford in a rematch of the 2004 National Championship at the Sports Pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 1 at 3:30 p.m. and will play its third match against San Diego on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 1:30 p.m.
Following the Diet Coke Classic, Minnesota will head to Berkeley, Calif. for a tournament. The Golden Gophers will face Eastern Kentucky (Sept. 7), Utah State (Sept. 8) and 2006 NCAA Regional Semifinal participant California (Sept. 8) in that tournament.
Minnesota will host a second home non-conference tournament for the first time since 2003, when it brings Charlotte, Creighton and Wisconsin-Green Bay to the Sports Pavilion for the Gopher Invitational on Sept. 14-15. The Golden Gophers will face Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 p.m., Wisconsin-Green Bay on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 12:30 p.m. and Creighton in the final match of the tournament on Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m.
The Golden Gophers open up Big Ten play at home against Purdue on Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. and Indiana on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m. Minnesota’s first road match of the conference season will be at Iowa on Wednesday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m.
Minnesota will host another Sunday match on Sept. 30 against Michigan at 1 p.m. The Golden Gophers will hit the road to face Ohio State on Friday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. (CT) and then will meet four-time defending Big Ten Champion Penn State for the first time on Saturday, Oct. 6 at 6 p.m. (CT).
The Golden Gophers first meeting against Wisconsin will come at home on Friday, Oct. 12 at 7 p.m. Minnesota will welcome Penn State to the Sports Pavilion on Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m.
Minnesota will also face Ohio State at Williams Arena on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. It marks the fourth straight year the Golden Gophers have played at Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers have averaged 9,688 fans in the three years since they started playing one match a year at Williams Arena.
The Golden Gophers will finish the conference slate on the road for five of the final seven matches. Minnesota will travel to Michigan (Nov. 2), Indiana (Nov. 9) and Purdue (Nov. 10), before returning home to face Michigan State (Nov. 16) and Michigan State (Nov. 17) in its final home weekend.
Minnesota will finish the season at Illinois on Friday, Nov. 23 and will face Wisconsin in its final Big Ten match of the season for the first time since 1992 on Saturday, Nov. 24.
The Golden Gophers will play against eight different teams who finished in the top 25 in last year’s final CSTV/AVCA Top 25 poll.
Minnesota returns 10 letterwinners from last year’s 2006 squad that advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals, went 26-8 and finished second in the Big Ten at 17-3. That group includes senior middle blocker Jessy Jones (Naperville, Ill.) who received Honorable-Mention All-Big Ten, junior outside hitter Kyla Roehrig (Papillion, Neb.) who was named to the NCAA Regional All-Tournament team and junior setter Rachel Hartmann (St. Charles, Ill.). Minnesota also welcomes the fourth-ranked recruiting class in the nation according to prepvolleyball.com.
