The University of Minnesota volleyball team and interim head coach Laura Bush has released the 2012 volleyball schedule. Minnesota will play in three tournaments, travel for a two-match road contests against Texas prior to competing in 20 Big Ten Conference matches this upcoming season.
Minnesota begins its season on the road, Aug. 25 in Harrisonburg, Va. at the James Madison Tournament, which features the host team, Seton Hall and Appalachian State. Minnesota's first home contest will be the annual Diet Coke Classic Aug. 31 and Sept 1 at the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers will then travel to Austin, Texas to compete against Texas, Sept. 6-7 in a Thursday-Friday match-up. After a Monday contest against North Dakota State on Sept. 10 at the Pavilion, Minnesota concludes its non-conference schedule when it travels to Tulsa, Okla., Sept. 14-15.
The Gophers will be on the road to start the Big Ten Conference season when it travels to Illinois and Northwestern, Friday, Sept, 21 and Sunday, Sept. 23. Minnesota then hosts back-to-back weekends against Ohio State/Penn State (Sept. 28-29), while hosting Michigan and Michigan State on Wed., Oct. 3 and Sat., Oct. 6. Minnesota will then play at Iowa on Oct. 12, and at Nebraska, the next day, Sat., Oct. 13. Minnesota hosts border rival Wisconsin on Wed., Oct. 17, followed by Purdue, Sat. Oct. 20. The Gophers then host Northwestern and Illinois, Oct. 26 and 28.
The Gophers will be on the road three of the final four weeks of the regular season. After a Nov. 2-3 trip to Penn State and Ohio State, the Gophers will then play at Michigan State and Michigan, Nov. 9-10. The Gophers and Huskers will play on Fri. Nov. 16 and conclude the regular season on Sat. Nov. 17 against Iowa. Minnesota will finish up the regular season Thanksgiving week when it travels to Wisconsin on Wed., Nov. 21 and at Indiana, Sat., Nov. 24. The 2012 season marks the second-straight year Minnesota will face Indiana and Purdue once.
After a Sweet 16 season in 2011, the Gophers hope to make another run in the 2012 campaign. The NCAA First and Second Rounds will be Nov. 30-Dec. 1, while the NCAA Regionals will be held Dec. 7-8. This year's NCAA Final Four will be held in Louisville, Ken., Dec. 13 and 15.
