GO GOPHERS! GO GOPHERS!
Minnesota Volleyball Puerto Rico Spring Trip - Katie Vatterrodt Diary (Mar. 21)

Go Gophers!

Today marks the last day of our Puerto Rico trip. We made some great strides as a team during this trip and hope to continue on the same path as we return to Minneapolis. Our team is excited about the improving chemistry and level of play this week. There are definitely areas where we still have work to do, but overall we all felt the trip was a success. Thursday was the last day we were scheduled to compete, so today its time to relax.

During our stay this week in Puerto Rico, we have been experiencing a lot of rainy weather. Stronger storms have hit the northern shore of the island pretty hard. The amount of rain and high winds has caused flooding and mudslides. Some of the waves from this storm have reached 30 feet! I read this in the newspaper this morning. I have been working on speaking Spanish (it’s my minor) while in Puerto Rico, but they speak so fast my brain just can’t keep up. I read the newspaper for practice and saw that Puerto Rico is having serious trouble with the weather. Luckily the worst has passed, so today we were still able to make it to the beach. Alex asked us to stay out of the water because of the strong current.

Staying out of the water was not a problem since the plan on the team is to get burned at the beach. It’s the last day, and we have to have some proof that we went to a tropical place over break. We drove up to Luquillo, a public beach on the north eastern side. It was a beautiful beach lined with palm trees. The good news is that despite the cloud cover, everyone got a little color. It was probably the SPF 4 that did the trick. I still win the palest teammate award, just a few freckles for me.

After a few hours at the beach we headed back to the hotel to shake out all the sand, clean up and relax. Since it was Good Friday almost everything was closed, but we found Chili’s was open. We had our final team dinner, then went back to the hotel to pack. We have an early flight and will be leaving at 4 am tomorrow morning...so much for sleeping in on Spring Break! We had a great trip, but all good things must come to an end. We return to the cold tomorrow and will continue our hard work in the gym as we work toward next season. Thanks for all of your support and Happy Easter !!
