Gophersports.com caught up with Minnesota Volleyball great and professional player, Lauren Gibbemeyer. Gibbemeyer hit .336 during her Gopher career and still holds the school record in total blocks (591). After completing her Gopher career in 2010, Gibbemeyer has been on the national and international scene, most recently with Igor Volley Novara. Her team recently won the Italian Cup and are ready for the playoff season. Here's a short question/answer session with Gibbemeyer in this latest Gophers in the Pros.
Gopher Sports: You're playing for a different team this year in Italy, how has your experience been with Igor Volley Novara?
Lauren Gibbemeyer: After three years with my previous team, I decided to make a switch this year and play for Novara. Right away I was able to get into a really nice rhythm with my teammates and the society! I’ve played for our coach before and I have a lot of respect for the work he puts into his teams. We have a lot of expectations for this season and so far, we have been able to accomplish the first two trophies of the year!
GS: The team had quite an accomplishment recently, winning the Italian Cup. Talk about the championship and what that meant for the team?
LG: Winning the Italian Cup is a great accomplishment not only for our team, but also for me personally as it is my first Italian Cup gold medal! With how strong the Italian league, I think it shows that our team is headed in the right direction. We know that any team can win on any given night so we much always go into the matches with the right mentality.
GS: Playing with USA Volleyball, you've had the chance to play with and against some of the best in USA Volleyball, including playing against them in professional volleyball. Is it hard to go up against some great teammates professionally?
LG: I think at this point, we have played with and against each other so much that we know how that person plays so it actually makes it a little easier to go up against them and vice versa I’m sure! I love being able to see my American teammates while overseas so it’s always a treat for me when we get the chance to play against each other.
GS: You had a chance to play with Tori Dixon at Minnesota, but was this the first time you really got to know some Gopher alums in Sarah Wilhite, Paige Tapp and Hannah Tapp. Do you guys all share a common bond being Gopher alums?
LG: After meeting the Tapps and Sarah, I immediately felt a Minnie bond! They are all such sweet girls and remind me of home so much. Im super grateful to be able to play with them and know them on a personal level.
GS: What's your upcoming schedule the rest of the season? How can Igor use the Italian Cup motivate you for the rest of the season?
LG: We didn’t have much time to celebrate the Italian Cup, but I believe that it has given our team the little extra push that will help carry us into the playoff of the league and champions league! We have a bunch of super important matches coming up so we need to stay level headed and the motivation to win everything is growing stronger every day.
