CC McGraw is in her first semester with the Golden Gophers after graduating early from Prior Lake High School in Prior Lake, Minn. Named an Under Armour First Team All-American, she competed at the 2017 Under Armour All-America match at the NCAA Volleyball Final Four. The 2017 Ms. Baden Volleyball award winner, which goes out to the top senior athlete in the state of Minnesota, McGraw was also named Prior Lake's Athena Award winner. Named a three-time Minnesota State High School League's All-Tournament team in 2015, 2016 and 2017, she helped the Lakers to state runner up (2015), consolation champions (2016) and third place finish her senior year. With Minnesota Select, McGraw played with the 18-1's her sophomore and junior years as her team won the USAV open championship in 2016. Get to know McGraw in this recent Gopher Spotlight.
Gopher Sports: You had a pretty successful high school career, although it's pretty recent, what were some of your most memorable moments?
CC McGraw: The past couple of years, my high school team has played very well and were really successful. We were lucky enough to make it to state and made a state run three years in a row. It was an awesome experience getting to represent our community and our school at the state tournament. My sophomore year, playing in the state championship is something I'll never forget. It was an awesome experience, and I had a lot of fun with my teammates and really enjoyed the experience overall.
GS: When and how did you get started playing volleyball?
CM: Both of my sisters played from young ages so, they kind of brought me into it and started peppering me in the front yard. I just remember them yelling at me if I didn't dig a ball. They said they're stop playing with me if I didn't dig it. That's how I started to love the game and get involved with it.
GS: Is that how you started being the DS libero, because of your sisters?
CM: Yeah, also, I was very little. They kind of just threw me back there and I was like alright, I love the game so I'll do whatever. So, that's kind of where it started.
GS: You recently competed in the Under Armour All-America game, what was that experience like playing on the Final Four court?
CM: I was so honored getting invited to compete with the top 24 players in the nation. To meet them and to experience that with them, it was pretty cool that Adanna got to have that too, even though we played on opposing teams. I was the only one from Minnesota and it was great getting to represent my state. I love the game and playing in a match like that, in front of a crowd like that, was really cool.
GS: How did you decide to come to Minnesota?
CM: It was a no-brainer for me. Ever since day one, I've wanted to be a Gopher. My mom and dad both came here, my sisters came here, I love the coaching staff, the atmosphere, the culture, just everything about it. I fell in love it the first time on campus.
GS: You've been with the program for about a month now. How's it going so far?
CM: I love it. I knew it was going to be tough at first. With the transition from high school, really busy and stressful at times, but, everyone's been super welcoming. I'm learning a lot in practices, and conditioning is super fun, of course. But, it's really good.
GS: What is something new you've learned since you've been here?
CM: I think, really just, being open to new things and to change. That's probably the biggest thing. The other is simplifying my overall game and just everything about volleyball.
GS: Tell us something about yourself personally. Like what's your favorite movie?
CM: I would say my favorite movie is Elf. No doubt about that, that's my go-to.
GS: Do you watch it any other time besides Christmas?
CM: Yes, I do. All the time!
