The No. 6 University of Minnesota volleyball program earned a three-set win as it defeated host UAB, 3-0, tonight in Birmingham, Ala. Minnesota won, 25-19, 25-14, 25-17 to earn its second win of the day and of the 2013 season. The Golden Gophers also won their first match of the day, 3-0, over Jacksonville State.
Minnesota was led by Tori Dixon has she had 15 kills, one attack error in 26 swings to hit .538 in the match. Dixon also had three solo blocks and four block assists in the win. Along with her 17 kills in the first match, Dixon had 32 on the day. Sarah Wilhite had seven kills, while Ashley Wittman had six (6-1-18, .278). Alexandra Palmer added 26 assists, while Wittman led the defense with 15 digs.
Minnesota had six aces in the win, while outblocking UAB, 9-7 and held a 47-37 dig advantage. Minnesota hit .256 in the match to UAB's .082. The Gophers' best set between the pins was in the second when it hit .423 in the second.
The Gophers play two more matches tomorrow as they continue the UAB/Samford Challenge. Minnesota plays Georgia State at 10 a.m., followed by Samford at 5 p.m.
-Paige Tapp competed in her first collegiate game as she came in as a sub in the third set
-Palmer recorded a kill in the match, posted an ace and 26 assists
-Dixon had a double double when she also recorded 15 kills and 11 digs
-Aug. 30 marked a full year in which Hugh McCutcheon has been with the Golden Gopher volleyball program. McCutcheon joined the Gopher Volleyball team after his USA Volleyball committment was fufillied.
Turning Points in the Match
Set 1: Minnesota only held a one-point lead 15-13 lead before the Gophers pulled away and went on a 6-1 run and increased its lead to 21-14. Santana had a kill for the Gophers' 20-14 lead and added another point on a UAB attack error. Minnesota closed out the set with back-to-back points on a Dixon kill and a UAB attack error.
Set 2: Minnesota used a 5-1 run at the 18-11 mark to help win the second set. Minnesota ended the set with five-straight points on a kill by Tapp, a UAB attack error and kills from Dixon and Wittman.
Set 3: Minnesota jumped out to an 11-2 lead and never looked back. With a Wilhite kill and an attack error by UAB, Minnesota was up 20-9. The Gophers closed out the match with a kill from Wittman, her seventh of the game.
Buford; Handley Make CNT-Indy Roster
Minnesota will have two representatives on U.S. Collegiate National Team-Indianapolis program in middle blocker Kayla Buford and setter Erica Handley.
