Gophers Open Season with 3-0 Win

The University of Minnesota volleyball team kicked off the 2013 season with a 3-0 set win over Jacksonville State, today in conjunction with the UAB/Samford Challenge. Minnesota won the first match of the season 25-8, 25-15 and 25-16.The Golden Gophers were led by senior Tori Dixon has she had 17 kills in 25 swings to hit .400 on the day. She committed just three attack errors, established one service ace, 12 digs and three block assists. Daly Santana and Ashley Wittman each hit over .300 in the match. Santana had 12 kills in 30 attempts to hit .300, while Wittman added 10 kills on 22 swings for a .364 hitting percentage. Sarah Wilhite also had 10 kills and seven digs.
Turning Points in the Match
Set 1: Minnesota opened the first set with a 12-4 run before Jacksonville State called a timeout. After Jacksonville State put the set at 18-8 on a kill, Minnesota would finish the set on a 7-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.
Set 2: The Gophers would use a 9-1 run in the second set to push it to 16-6.lead. In that span, Wittman had three kills to Dixon and Wilhite's two. As Jacksonville State closed the gap at 19-12, Minnesota would finish off the set with a 6-3 run with a Dixon kill and a second-set win.
Set 3: As Minnesota changed its lineup, Jacksonville State started off the third set with an 8-2 run. The Gophers, however, battled back as they tied and took the lead for good on three-straight kills from Dixon. In the third set alone, Dixon had seven kills as she finished off the third set with her 17th of the game.Notable Statistics
