MINNEAPOLIS – University of Minnesota track and field freshman thrower Nicolle Murphy has been named a 2013 high school All-American by Track and Field News for her performance in the javelin last spring.
Murphy, a native of Arkansas City, Kan., had the third-best javelin mark in the nation as a senior at Arkansas City High School during the 2013 season. Her throw of 168-5 set a school record at the Kansas Class 5A Region 8 meet. She was the javelin state champion as a senior with a 5A state meet record throw of 151-1 after finishing as state runner-up her junior year.
"Nicolle is a great addition to our group," said Peter Miller, assistant coach for throws. "She is very new to the sport, having only started throwing in early 2012, but she has already accomplished so much. She always comes to practice ready to learn, but more, ready to have fun. Everyone on the team enjoys being around her, so it is great that she will be a cornerstone of the throws group for the next 4-5 years."
During high school, Murphy competed in softball as a freshman and sophomore before transitioning to track and field her junior and senior years. She was the 2012 Arkansas Valley Chisholm Trail League champion in the javelin and triple jump and also was the 2012 USATF National Junior Olympics champion in javelin.
At Arkansas City High School, Murphy set triple jump and javelin school records. She was the 2012 Wendy's High School Heisman award winner for the Bulldogs. In addition to her softball and track background, Murphy spent 10 years as a competitive cheerleader.
Murphy and the Gophers begin the 2014 track and field season by hosting the Northwest Open at the UM Fieldhouse on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014.
