MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota women's track and field team held its annual awards banquet on Sept. 15. The Gophers celebrated their 2013 season and welcomed their newcomers for the 2014 season.
The Gophers handed out their 2013 team awards, honoring Track MVP Laura Docherty (St. Paul, Minn.) and Field MVP Todea-Kay Willis (Mavis Bank, Jamaica). The Newcomer of the Year award went to Te'Shon Adderley (Nassau, Bahamas).
Molly Kayfes (Maple Grove, Minn.), Megan Geyen (Watertown, Minn.) and Devin Stanford (Milwaukee, Wis.) received the Most Improved Award, and Kaila Urick (Chaska, Minn.), Lyndsey Thorpe (Stanley, Wis.) and Madison Smith (Brainerd, Minn.) were the Blue Collar Award recipients. Kelli Budd (Omaha, Neb.), Becci Ostderdyk (Mora, Minn.) and Jessica Waldvogel (Wausau, Wis.) received the Coaches Award.
The indoor track and field season begins with the Northwest Open at the Minnesota Fieldhouse on Saturday, January 18.
Track MVP: Laura Docherty
Docherty earned All-American honorable mention status after finishing 18th in the 5,000m at the outdoor NCAA championships. She also ran the third-best 5,000m time in Gopher history (16:10.63) at the NCAA West Preliminary Round meet. In the 10,000m, Docherty broke the school record at Stanford (33:24.93) and finished as the Big Ten runner-up. During the indoor season, Docherty was the 5,000m runner-up at the Big Ten Championships with a time of 16:15.00, the second-best in school history. She also took third in the 3,000m with the third-best time in Minnesota history (9:23.60).
Field MVP: Todea-Kay Willis
Willis finished seventh in long jump at the outdoor Big Ten Championships and took 21st at the NCAA West Preliminary Round meet (20-0 1/4). She is the third Gopher to sail over the 20-foot mark in long jump. During the indoor season, Willis broke the school record in the long jump with a leap of 20-7 3/4 (6.29m) to finish second at the Big Ten Championships. She was named to the All-Big Ten second team. Willis also set a personal record and ran the third-best Minnesota all-time mark in the 60m (7.42).
Newcomer of the Year: Te'Shon Adderley
Adderley finished fourth in the 800m at the indoor Big Ten Championships with the fourth-best time in school history (2:06.42). She was also part of the 4x400m relay team that finished fourth at Big Tens with the second-best time in Minnesota history (3:40.99). In the outdoor season, Adderley finished 16th at the NCAA West Preliminary Round meet with the third-best 800m time in school history (2:06.38). She placed sixth in the 800m at the Big Ten Championships (2:09.99).
As a sophomore in 2013, Kayfes finished third in the 5,000m at the indoor Big Ten Championships with the third-best time in school history (16:15.31). She also took sixth in the 3,000m in 9:30.39, the Gophers' ninth-best all-time mark, at the indoor Big Ten meet. Geyen ran a personal record time of 55.32 in the 400m at the indoor Big Ten Championships, the sixth-best time in Minnesota history, and led off the fourth-place 4x400m relay that ran the school's second-best all-time race in 3:40.99. During the outdoor season, she finished 17th in the 400 meters at the NCAA West Preliminary Round (53.81) and was Big Ten runner-up in the 400m (53.91). Stanford recorded the fifth-best weight throw in Gopher history (60-1 1/4, 18.32m) to finish 12th at the indoor Big Ten Championships. Outdoor, she recorded the seventh-best hammer throw (189-1, 57.63m) and seventh-best discus throw (170-4, 51.93m) in school history.
Urick competed in the 3,000m at the indoor Big Ten Championships and ran the 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m outdoor. Thorpe's indoor season-best shot put mark was 43-9 1/4 (13.34m), and she posted an indoor season-best weight throw of 49-2 1/4 (14.99m). During the outdoor season, she finished 14th in the hammer throw at the Big Ten Championships. Smith ran her indoor season-best time of 1:34.42 in the 600m at the Big Ten Championships and finished 13th in the 400m hurdles at the outdoor Big Ten Championships (1:02.27).
Budd ran the seventh-best 3,000m steeplechase time in school history (10:34.67) at the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Ostderdyk finished 11th in the shot put at both the indoor and outdoor Big Ten Championships; her season-best mark of 47-6 1/2 (14.49m) came at the indoor Big Ten meet. Waldvogel was the third runner on the Gophers' second-best all-time 4x400m relay, which finished fourth at the indoor Big Ten Championships (3:40.99). She also finished seventh in the 400m at the outdoor Big Ten Championships (56.00) after posting the program's ninth-fastest 400m time in prelims (55.57).
