MINNEAPOLIS – Agnes Esser has advanced to the discus final at the 2017 FISU Summer World University Games. Esser threw 52.69m (172-10) to place fourth in Qualification Group A and 11th overall to punch her ticket to the final in Taipei, Taiwan.
Esser threw 52.69m on her third throw after posting marks of 47.66m (156-04) and 50.53m (165-09) on her first two throws. She was in fourth place following the first qualification group and ended the qualification round in 11th overall. Qualifying performances of 55.00m automatically advanced to the final with at least the top 12 best performers moving on.
The Gopher senior is one of 51 athletes representing Athletics Canada at the event, which runs through Wednesday, Aug. 30.
Up next for Esser is the hammer qualifying round set for 11:15 p.m. CT Wednesday, followed by the discus final at 6:35 a.m. CT Thursday.
According to local time in Taiwan, Esser will compete in the hammer qualifying round at 12:15 p.m. and the discus final at 7:35 p.m. on Thursday with the hammer final to follow on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 4 p.m.
At the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju City, South Korea, Esser finished 11th in the discus with a throw of 52.44m (172-00).
The World University Games, known around the world as Universiade, is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU, or International University Sports Federation). The Universiade is an international sporting event and cultural festival that is staged every two years in a different city. It is only second to the Olympic Games.
The Summer Universiade consists of 14 compulsory sports and up to 3 optional sports chosen by the host country. Embracing FISU's motto of 'Excellence in Mind and Body', the Summer Universiade incorporates educational and cultural aspects into 12 days of sports competitions, allowing university student-athletes from all over the world to celebrate with the host city in a true spirit of friendship and sportsmanship.
