MINNEAPOLIS – Agnes Esser is set to compete in the discus and hammer throw for her native Canada at the 2017 FISU Summer World University Games. Esser is one of 51 athletes representing Athletics Canada at the event, which runs Saturday, Aug. 19 through Wednesday, Aug. 30 in Taipei, Taiwan.
According to local time in Taiwan, Esser will compete in the discus qualifying round on Wednesday, Aug. 23 with two sections set for 9:30 a.m. and 10:40 a.m. The hammer qualifying round (12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m.) and discus final (7:35 p.m.) are set for Thursday, Aug. 24, and the hammer final will follow on Saturday, Aug. 26 at 4 p.m.
At the 2015 World University Games in Gwangju City, South Korea, Esser finished 11th in the discus with a throw of 52.44m. She advanced to the discus final with a throw of 52.25m in the qualifying round, which placed her fourth in Group B and ninth overall.
Entering her senior year for the Gophers in 2017-18, Esser is Minnesota's program record-holder in the discus at 57.91m (190-00), a mark she set in 2016. She also ranks fourth in program history in the hammer throw at 61.66m (202-03) and second in program history in the weight throw at 20.94m (68-08.50). She was the 2017 Big Ten Conference runner-up in the weight throw and a 2016 Second Team All-American after placing 15th in the discus at the national meet. Esser is a six-time NCAA West Prelim qualifier with three appearances each in the discus and the hammer.
The World University Games, known around the world as Universiade, is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes by the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU, or International University Sports Federation). The Universiade is an international sporting event and cultural festival that is staged every two years in a different city. It is only second to the Olympic Games.
The Summer Universiade consists of 14 compulsory sports and up to 3 optional sports chosen by the host country. Embracing FISU's motto of 'Excellence in Mind and Body', the Summer Universiade incorporates educational and cultural aspects into 12 days of sports competitions, allowing university student-athletes from all over the world to celebrate with the host city in a true spirit of friendship and sportsmanship.
